# Build a competitor evidence set

Answer one question: how do a few products describe the same problem, and what do visible users ask for?

## Select a bounded comparison

1. Open one relevant Product Hunt list and three product detail pages. Choose products serving a similar situation, not merely the same category.
2. Manually load the descriptions and comments you want. Add a relevant Hacker News discussion as a fifth tab if it provides useful counter-evidence.
3. Use Select tabs and select only these pages. Export Markdown for reading and JSON for structured originals; CSV can help compare supported item fields.
4. Read the preview and warnings. Create your own comparison with a source URL for every claim.

## Keep the distinction between claims and evidence

Product Hunt can preserve product names, taglines, topics, visible votes, comments and links when present. A launch ranking is a snapshot of that page, not market share or paid adoption.

A product website link is retained from the DOM; the extension does not follow it to audit pricing or features. Open and manually export ordinary product pages separately if you need their current claims.

## A prompt for your own analysis tool

Using only these exported sources, compare the products by target situation, claimed outcome and visible objections. For every observation cite a source URL and exact supporting passage. Separate vendor claims from user comments. Mark absent information as unknown. Suggest three questions to verify manually; do not invent prices, adoption or market share.

## Repeat the comparison deliberately

Save a dated set for a future check. History helps skip unchanged variants; a changed description or discussion can become a new substantive version. Metrics-only movement is not treated as a new substantive version by default.

Exports reflect loaded page content. The ordinary exporter does not scroll, paginate, expand replies, crawl links or fetch hidden data. Check the preview and extraction warnings before relying on a file.
