What is CSV format?

CSV means comma-separated values. It is a text representation of tabular data, not an Excel workbook. CSV does not store multiple worksheets, workbook styles or charts. Delimiters and quoting let a field contain punctuation or a line break, so counting visual text lines is not a reliable record count.

In WebToSpark, CSV exports extracted records, including different row types from a source. A discussion can produce several rows; the number of rows is not the number of source pages used by the free allowance.

How to open a CSV file in Excel

Menus differ by Excel version and operating system. Microsoft notes that direct opening of UTF-8 CSV is reliable when a BOM is present; otherwise its documented import route allows explicit decoding. Do not assume every application detects encoding correctly.

  1. Keep a copy of the original export before editing. Open Excel and use Data → Get Data → From File → From Text/CSV, or the Text/CSV import command available in your version.
  2. Select the exported .csv file. Review the preview, choose a comma delimiter and UTF-8 encoding if the importer asks.
  3. Before loading, treat identifiers and values you must preserve exactly as text. Check automatic type conversion for dates, long numbers and leading zeros.
  4. Load the table, filter record_type, and inspect a few records against the original web source. Save as an Excel workbook if you need multiple sheets or formatting.

UTF-8, quotes and nested columns

CSV describes the table representation; UTF-8 describes character encoding. “CSV UTF-8” is still CSV. If Chinese text or accented characters appear garbled, reimport the unchanged original with the correct encoding rather than saving over it. If all values appear in one column, check the delimiter.

WebToSpark uses a stable superset of columns. Filter record_type=comment for captured comments. parent_id and depth describe captured relationships; links_json and metrics_json can contain serialized arrays or objects. A comma inside quoted text does not necessarily create a new cell.

Cells beginning with spreadsheet-formula trigger characters are prefixed with an apostrophe by the exporter. Preserve that protection when handling untrusted web text. It is not a reason to remove prefixes in bulk.

CSV vs Excel: keep the source and the working file

Use the original CSV as an interchange copy and an .xlsx workbook as your analysis workspace. Do not repeatedly overwrite the source while experimenting with types, filters or transformations. Media remain URLs, not downloaded attachments. Missing page content cannot be recovered by opening the file in Excel.
